SUP adventures in the cold season

Stand-up paddling is no longer just a summer pastime.

Enthusiastic paddlers are unstoppable, even in winter.

When Anja Mörk from the girls_on_sups tried to scrape off the frozen drops of water on her SUP in the Eibsee car park a few years ago, a few passing tourists didn't know whether to shake their heads, laugh, roll their eyes, pointedly ignore her, take a selfie with her or ask her lots of curious questions.

An inflatable like this is also difficult to roll up when a layer of water has frozen! 😃 But none of that mattered to the enthusiastic winter paddler. The three and a half hours on the water were worth it. A dream of Winter Wonderland from a perspective that many people never get to experience...

The fascination of winter paddling

Paddling in winter has become a normal experience for many people. Those who embark on the adventure of winter paddling are rewarded with a unique, often mystical atmosphere. The silence on the water, clear air and icy banks create an impressive backdrop that makes paddling a very special experience.

Without the summer hustle and bustle, many waters are deserted, allowing you to concentrate fully on nature and your own paddling. Wisps of mist over the water, glistening ice floes and the sound of breaking ice make for unforgettable moments. The silence is more intense than in summer, and every paddle stroke sounds particularly impressive across the mirror-smooth surface of the water.

The training element is more intense in winter, as the body is required to work harder to keep warm. What's more, there is hardly anything more satisfying than reviewing your experiences with a hot cup of tea after a winter SUP tour.

However, in addition to the fascination, stand up paddling in winter also brings some challenges. However, with the right preparation, you can enjoy the cold season safely and healthily on your board.

Stand up paddling in winter - how to do it without catching a cold

The right outfit on the board for this weather (1 degree Celsius air temperature and approx. 5 degrees Celsius water temperature) is a dry suit with ski underwear, waterproof socks, thick neoprene boots, gloves, scarf and hat.

Challenges and safety when stand up paddling in winter

Cold temperatures, shorter daylight hours and the risk of falling into icy water require special precautions. Here are some important points:

  • Proper clothing: A dry suit with insulating layers underneath provides warmth and prevents rapid cooling in the event of a fall. Gloves, dry socks, neoprene shoes and a hat are essential to minimize heat loss.

  • Safety equipment: A leash (safety line) ensures that the board does not drift away in the event of a fall. A life jacket offers additional safety.

  • Do not paddle alone: You should never go out on the water alone in winter. At least one paddling partner or a person on land who knows what to do is recommended.

  • Pay attention to the weather & light conditions: Cold, wind and early twilight can quickly become a problem. A headlamp can help you to be more visible in the dark.

  • Emergency planning: You should always carry a waterproof cell phone with you so that you can call for help in an emergency.
